Quote I love: “The obstacle is the way”
When the business is starting to bottle neck and you feel like there is too much to do, it is time to go back to your processes. The obstacle is usually the way. When you can solve the operational challenges which are a function of staying better organized, it does one of two things:
Builds structure to allow the company to grow or
Create time and head space for other areas of life
If is funny when starting out, all challenges are invigorating - something like a test. Can I prove myself worthy? As those tasks become routine and start to stack up, the “shine” starts to wear off. The business owner has a few options. The first is the suck it up and continue to do every task at all levels of the business or create crisp and clear processes, then build the team.
The team acts like a metal frame in a backpack, which allows the company to carry a heavier load over the long journey.
I am optimistic that we will look back in 3 months and be surprised at our level of organized and process. This really fires me up!
Mental Model: Economies of Scale
This model states that as on organization grows, costs reduce as employees have more defined roles and can handle a larger volume of work due to their specialization. While there is certainly a limit to this model, just like the body builder whose muscles are so big he can not tie his shoe laces, it behooves a company to probe and find the “optimal spot”.
It was short and sweet today. If you enjoyed this today, please forward it to another curious friend. I love your replies to The Real Deal. I read every single one, and I try to respond as often as I can.
