Real Deal #41
New Podcast:
Quote I love: “Who not how.”
I use this great quote when trying to tackle new problems outside of my circle of competence. (which turns out to be most things)
Company Update:
Our overarching goal for 2022 has been operational excellence. To that end, we are unifying the brand, signage, and websites across all nine stores to the First Stop Storage name. We are tightening up our processes and training our in-store managers along with adding new lines of revenue like retail sales of locks and boxes or renting U-Haul trucks.
I am in the working phases of creating First Stop Storage University. My hope is to create a digital suites of training products that covers 80% of “how we do it here”. It will not replace on the job training or mentoring but serve to answer many questions and help new team members feel included faster. If anyone has created something like this I would love to chat.
Mental Model: Inversion
Often times when you are stuck trying to solve a problem it is best to invert or work backwards. This line of thinking was used by Carl Jacobi a German mathematician in the 19th century. Many times by working backwards we can avoid obvious pitfalls or see the problem through a different lens. This model works hand in hand with “beginning with the end in mind.”
Cooking in the Kitchen:
I smoked some ribs last week on the pit. Man- did they turn out good.
Pearson Family Rub Recipe:
Equal Parts: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and paprika.
Rub the ribs.
Light the fire. Set to 225 degrees.
Smoke for 3 hours. Wrap in foil, smoke for another 2 hours.
C’est Bon!
It was short and sweet today. If you enjoyed this today, please forward it to another curious friend. I love your replies to The Real Deal. I read every single one, and I try to respond as often as I can.
